Nine years into recovery from the Great Recession, labor-productivity-growth rates remain near historic lows across many advanced economies. Some argue that this slowdown is likely permanent. Others argue that the weak productivity regime is likely a statistical illusion, the product of mismeasurement. Still others argue that the slowdown is temporary. Proponents of this view argue that, in an era of digitization and other brilliant new technologies, a surge in structural productivity growth is readily attainable—if not a looming reality. In that vein, new research from McKinsey Global Institute identified several initiatives that could dramatically boost productivity over the next ten years. Are the opportunities from digitization identified by MGI hype or hope? Jaana Remes, economist and partner at MGI, will present on these latest findings, and Professor Chad Syverson of the University of Chicago Booth School Business, one of the nation’s foremost experts on productivity, will provide his perspective.
