Using Economic Statistics to Understand Business Cycles
2007 NABE Professional Development Seminar for Economic Statistics
April 22-24, 2007 • San Diego Marriott La Jolla • San Diego, California
Sponsored by the NABE Foundation
You asked for a short, cost-effective program to explain economic statistics in the context of the broader economy…NABE’s got it for you!
In just two days, you will take away skills they can use on their first day back in the office!
You’ll be prepared to
- Find the correct economic data more efficiently by knowing what to look for and where to find it.
- Evaluate the data by knowing what it is—and what it’s not.
- Contact the agency experts who can explain the data.
- Employ the techniques used by other professionals, taught here through “case studies.”
You'll connect with instructors and other attendees who will become valuable resources…including those who:
- Provide data—government agencies, Federal Reserve Board, and private sector professionals
- Use data—economists, planners, analysts, and researchers
- Offer special services—like customized data, forecasts, and economic studies
The NBER’s Recession Dating Procedure
“The committee places particular emphasis on two monthly measures of activity across the entire economy: (1) personal income less transfer payments, in real terms and (2) employment. In addition, the committee refers to two indicators with coverage primarily of manufacturing and goods: (3) industrial production and (4) the volume of sales of the manufacturing and wholesale-retail sectors adjusted for price changes. The committee also looks at monthly estimates of real GDP such as those prepared by Macroeconomic Advisers. Although these indicators are the most important measures considered by the NBER in developing its business cycle chronology, there is no fixed rule about which other measures contribute information to the process.” (See http://www.nber.org/cycles/recessions.html.)
